Train Ride Around the West

During the summer of 1981, Pam, my mother, my father and I decided it would be fun to take a long train ride. Since my father had worked for the Soo Line railroad for so many years, he did the most of the planning. So off we went on a two week adventure. Chicago to Flagstaff Arizona with side trip to the Grand Canyon. Flagstaff to Los Angeles with a side trip to DisneyLand and Universal Studios. Los Angeles to Oregon to see the Oregon Coast. Oregon to Seattle to see the Space Needle. Seattle to Vancouver for a couple of days. Vancouver back to Seattle to catch the Empire Builder going east to Glacier National Park for a couple of days. Glacier to Minot N.D. to visit Pam's parents and then back to Chicago.

Two Weeks and 8,000 miles. This was a trip of a lifetime!

Cruising to Alaska

Pam and I were fortunate to be able to take a cruise to Alaska, on the Celebrity Cruise Ship "Infinity", in 2004. This was and is a top of the line ship. Almost 1000 feet long with a bunch of decks, but only 2000 passengers. That is a low number for a ship of this size. We flew from Atlanta to Vancouver where the ship was leaving from. The plan was to go from Vancouver to Ketchikan, Alaska, then to the Hubbard Glacier, to Juneau, Alaska, to Sitka, Alaska and then back to Vancouver. It didn't exactly work out that way for us.

We were on the way to Juneau and Pam was not feeling good and thought she was sea sick. I couldn't understand this because the trip had been so smooth that, as far as I could tell, we werent' even at sea. We went to the sick bay and discovered that she was having a gall bladder problem. She then spent a couple days between being in bed in our room and being in the sick bay. Pam thought the Dr. was nice and I thought the nurses were nice. Anyway, to make a long story short, when we arrived at Sitka, the Dr. thought that it would be a good idea if we left the ship and get Pam to the hospital in Sitka. So ended our Alaska cruise.
